Smithsonian Affiliations

The American Civil War Center At Historic Tredegar was designated a Smithsonian Affiliate in 2002. As an affiliate, the Center has access to resources of the Smithsonian Institution including artifacts, traveling exhibits, programming, and technical assistance. The Center is currently one of only nine affiliates in Virginia.

Virginia Center for Digital History

The Virginia Center for Digital History and the Center have worked together to create an on-line history lab where educators and students “do” history. Access to archives of primary source materials enable students to investigate questions, draw conclusions, and share their work. Our approach is distinctive and appealing for while there are numerous and growing digital archives on the web there are few sites aimed at doing experiential education for the study of the past.

Richmond National Battlefield Park Visitor Center
The American Civil War Center at Historic Tredegar is also home to the Richmond National Battlefield Park Visitor Center, which provides an overview of Richmond during the War and orients visitors to the many Civil War-related attractions in and around Richmond.  The Center and the National Park Service work in partnership on the mutual goals of providing programs for the interpretation and education of Civil War history, and ensuring the preservation of the Tredegar Iron Works.
