Walk a Mile in My Shoes: Common People in an Uncommon War |
|
| |
Soldiers weren’t the only persons impacted by the Civil War. Back home mothers and children—both white and black— struggled to keep the household going while fathers and sons were away.
Students use reproduction artifacts and primary documents to explore the impact of the war on the home-front, and the legacy of the Civil War for ordinary citizens. (4th-6th grades) |

Carpetbaggers, Scalawags….and Jim Crow? A look at the Emancipation Proclamation, American Reconstruction, and Jim Crow |
|
| |
The Civil War changed everything. After victory, the US government wrestled with how best to reintegrate the South into the Union and newly freed African Americans into society.
How did they do? This program demonstrates the significance of the 13th, 14th and 15th amendments to the Constitution then sensitively examines how newly freed slaves made their living and how southern culture and ill-conceived government policy decisions gave rise to segregation and “Jim Crow.” (4th-6th, 11th grades) |

|
| |
This is a collaborative program between the American Civil War Center at Historic Tredegar and Hope in the Cities. High school students use the history of the Civil War as a point of departure to discuss issues in the world today— particularly race relations, among others—that affect them directly.
Contact the Center at 805.780.1865 x18 or education@tredegar.org to learn more about this four-part program that blends a site visit with in-class discussions and activities. (11th-12th grades) |
