The American Civil War Center at Historic Tredegar is
an educational campus that houses the National Park Service
Visitor Center and the home of a new exhibit entitled,
"In the Cause of Liberty."
In keeping with the mission of The American Civil
War Center, education programs will expand the
understanding of students and adult learners through a
variety of innovative and exciting programs. Students
will explore the Civil War through artifacts, exhibitions,
and hands-on activities.
All program curricula are designed around Virginia’s Standards of Learning and are conducted either on-site or in the classroom. For more information please contact education@tredegar.org or 804-780-1865.
A variety of on-site school programs are currently being offered, and
several new programs are under development. Through our History
Labs students will experience the Civil War in their own classrooms! Teachers
and students alike will have an opportunity to expand their learning using our Web-based Digital History.
Teacher Development Workshops
The Foundation already has a track record of conducting successful teacher training, having conducted a National Endowment for Humanities-funded workshop for teachers using nationally renowned historians, and having led several in-service training sessions for area teachers. In the future the Foundation will conduct annual summer workshops featuring leading scholars and aimed at training teachers in the use of our educational website. At least some of this training will be held on-site at the Center. Teachers will earn continuing education units by participating in these programs.
The programs/workshops under development will consist of:
- Guest historian lecturers
- Website training
- The use of primary and secondary sources in the study of history
- Teaching the Civil War from three perspectives: Union, Confederate, African-American
- A supplementary series of published monographs on key aspects of the Civil War, its causes and legacies.
See our News & Events section for current programming.
