Lincoln's Drive Through Richmond

Painted by Dennis Malone Carter (1827-1881) only a year after the events depicted, Lincoln’s Drive Through Richmond portrays the President’s visit to the fallen Confederate capital on April 4th, 1865, arriving only a day after the city was occupied by Union troops.

In 1866 Congress established two cavalry and four infantry regiments of African American soldiers. Nicknamed the "Buffalo Soldiers,” they represented 20 percent of all cavalry forces on the American frontier until the early 1890s.
Kepi, 4th Virginia (Stonewall Brigade)

Originally designated the 1st Brigade, the unit became the Stonewall Brigade after its commander, General Thomas J. Jackson, distinguished himself at First Manassas.
